Desmond - Talent & Organisational Development Consultant

At Maestro, we know there’s more to life than work. In fact, it’s the experiences, relationships and pursuits we have outside of work that can often give us an edge in what we do each day. We host an interview series called “Meet the Maestro” where we interview our Maestros and get an insight to who they really are and what makes them tick - beyond the CV.

Meet Desmond, a global HR leader and CIPD Chartered Fellow with over 20 years’ experience transforming organisations across Ireland, the Middle East and Asia. He partners with leadership teams to make organisations actually work; turning structure, talent and culture into real, lasting impact.

Desmond’s superpower? Bridging data-led strategy with human-centred leadership. He thrives on making complex change feel intuitive, inclusive and possible. Whether it’s reducing talent turnover, leading big HR transformations, or running executive development programs, he brings clarity, energy and purpose to every challenge. Passionate about building values-driven cultures of belonging, Desmond helps organisations unlock the potential of their people, and make work better for everyone.

1. Tell us about a career highlight to date…

‍The most defining highlight was the sheer resilience of starting my own organisation, TribusAgile, during the COVID-19 era. I went from a comfortable five-figure monthly salary on a Friday to zero on the following Monday. Building a successful business from that sudden standstill, where today I am grateful to be working with people I truly value, doing what I love, and being paid fairly for it, is my proudest achievement.

2. Talk us through an unusual career choice you’ve made along the way…

Moving from the established corporate structures of Ireland to become an Executive Consultant to the COO in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It was a leap into a completely different cultural and operational landscape, but it honed my cross-cultural fluency and taught me how to drive effectiveness through people in ways I hadn't imagined.

3. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Given my background in Politics, French, and Italian, I likely envisioned a life as a diplomat. While I didn't join the foreign service, I spend my days "translating" business needs into people strategies and navigating the complex "politics" of global organizational design.

4. What are your passions outside of work and how do you make time for them?

I have a deep appreciation for languages and culture, I maintain my Italian and French skills. Living in Singapore, I find that the vibrant, multi-cultural environment provides the perfect backdrop for these interests, even while managing my consulting work and academic contributions.

5. If you could instantly master any skill or hobby, what would it be and why?

I would love to instantly master advanced predictive AI architecture. While I already use tools like Perplexity, Gemini, Gamma, and Claude, mastering the deep technical side would allow me to further revolutionise how we use People Analytics to support employee experience.

6. What’s a personal value or belief that guides the way you live your life?

The importance of Belonging. I believe that when people feel they truly belong to an organisation, they don't just work better, they live better. This drives my focus on Inclusion in the design phase of every intervention I take on.

7. What’s a challenge you’ve overcome outside of work that shaped you?

Relocating my life and career across different continents. Each move required a total recalibration of my communication style and professional approach, teaching me a level of resilience and adaptability that I now bring to every client facing a major restructure.

8. What do you think your job will look like in 10 years’ time?

I believe the role will shift from "process manager" to "Human-AI Orchestrator". We will use AI for the administrative heavy lifting of HRIS and recruitment, allowing leaders to focus entirely on high-level coaching, emotional intelligence, and ethical culture-building.

9. If you could travel anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go and what would you do?

I’d dust off my underwater camera housing and dive into the Raja Ampat pristine waters to capture the incredible marine life. There is something profoundly grounding about being underwater; it requires a level of presence and calm that mirrors the "flow state" I seek in my professional work. Capturing that raw, natural beauty through a lens is the ultimate way to reset and find fresh perspective.

10. What does success look like to you?

Success is creating environments where strategic business goals and employee flourishing are not in competition. When I see a 25% improvement in leadership effectiveness or a significant reduction in regional costs that also results in a more engaged workforce, that is true success.
