About Fractional Work & Maestro
A fractional executive is a senior leader - a CFO, CMO, COO, CTO, CSO or similar - who works across one or more businesses on a part-time, project or interim basis rather than in a single full-time role. It's the model for experienced leaders who want meaningful, high-impact work without the constraints of traditional employment. If you have 10 or more years of senior leadership experience and want more flexibility, variety and autonomy in how you work, fractional is worth serious consideration.

As a fractional executive, you work part-time across one or more clients simultaneously - typically a set number of days per week or month - providing ongoing senior leadership. As an interim executive, you step into a business full-time for a defined period, usually to cover a leadership gap, manage a transition or lead a specific program. As an independent consultant, you are engaged for a specific project or outcome, bringing deep expertise to solve a defined problem. Maestro connects you with opportunities across all three models, depending on your preferences and goals.

A portfolio career means working across multiple clients, industries or disciplines simultaneously - rather than being tied to a single employer. For senior executives, it offers variety, autonomy, higher earning potential and the freedom to choose work that aligns with your values and ambitions. Maestro is built specifically to support portfolio careers, connecting experienced leaders across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore with the right opportunities and providing everything you need to thrive - from payroll and compliance to mentoring and community.

Joining Maestro
Maestro represents senior leaders and specialists with a minimum of 10 years' experience at leading organisations, consultancies or institutions - or significant experience building or scaling a startup or scale-up. We look beyond the CV for attitude, values and the kind of people who do great work because they care, not just because they're being paid. If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
The process is straightforward. You begin by completing a short expression of interest form online. We review your application and get back to you within 24 - 48 hours. If we think there's a strong fit, we schedule an interview - not a standard CV review, but a genuine conversation to understand your experience, ambitions, working style and what you're looking for. Successful applicants are then officially welcomed into the Maestro community, with full access to the platform, projects and support.
Yes. We require two recent professional references as part of our vetting process. This is part of how we maintain the quality of the Maestro community and give our clients confidence in every expert we represent.

Finding & Managing Projects
We take a human-led approach to matching - going well beyond skills and experience to consider personality, working style, personal goals and the conditions that bring out your best. When a client brief comes in, we draw on our deep knowledge of you and your Maestro profile to identify the strongest possible match. We don't have a list of preferred talent who receive all the work - we are always looking for the optimum fit for both sides.
We also have a private job board as part of the Maestro talent portal where you can search opportunities and put your name forward.
Absolutely. You have full autonomy over which opportunities you apply for and ultimately accept. Maestro will always present you with options and support your decision either way. The whole point is that you are in control of your work and your life.
Engagements vary widely depending on the client's needs and the nature of the work. Fractional arrangements typically run from one to twelve months, with a set number of days per week or month. Interim roles are usually full-time for a defined period - commonly three to twelve months. Project-based consulting engagements are scoped around a specific outcome. Some Maestros have worked with the same client for two years or more. We structure every engagement around what works for you and the client.
Yes. Maestro fully supports remote and hybrid working arrangements. Many of our engagements are conducted remotely, which is particularly valuable for talent based across different cities or countries in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Where a client requires onsite or hybrid presence, this will be clearly outlined in the project brief so you can make an informed decision before committing.
Yes, and many of our Maestros do. Working across multiple clients is one of the hallmarks of a fractional career - it provides variety, income diversification and the ability to apply your expertise in different contexts. Maestro can help you manage your portfolio and ensure your commitments are balanced and sustainable.
Payments & Compliance
You set up your bank details through the Maestro platform, issue a fortnightly or monthly tax invoice via Maestro, and we process payment within 7 to 14 days. The process is straightforward and designed to remove the administrative headache of managing invoicing and payment as an independent professional.
You set your own day rate based on your experience, expertise and the market for your discipline. Maestro can provide guidance on competitive rates for fractional executives and independent consultants across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore to help you position yourself appropriately. Clients set their project budgets and Maestro matches talent to engagements that align with both.
