Dr. Markus Schneider- Interim Operating Partner & Chief Transformation Officer | PE-backed Value Creation | AI-enabled Growth & Transformation
At Maestro, we know there’s more to life than work. In fact, it’s the experiences, relationships and pursuits we have outside of work that can often give us an edge in what we do each day. We host an interview series called “Meet the Maestro” where we interview our Maestros and get an insight to who they really are and what makes them tick - beyond the CV.
Markus thrives in organisations at inflection points: when growth has stalled, a transformation is wobbling, or a private equity thesis needs to become operational reality. Across a career spanning Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, EY-Parthenon and a PE-backed CEO role, he has built a reputation for turning strategy into measurable commercial impact, often in the environments where the stakes are highest and the complexity is greatest.
He has sat on every side of the table: advising investors, leading executive teams and running businesses firsthand. As CEO of HelloFreshGO, he led a full carve-out from HelloFresh SE, raised eight-figure funding and scaled the business into Germany’s leading fresh food workplace platform. Earlier in his career, he delivered more than $500m in EBITDA impact across large-scale transformation and value creation programs spanning Europe, APAC and the Middle East.
Today, Markus works with PE funds and leadership teams on growth acceleration, post-merger integration, operating model redesign and AI-enabled transformation. His superpower is translation: he can align investors on what needs to happen, then step into the business and make it happen operationally. That ability to bridge strategy, execution and technology is what makes him especially valuable in moments of real change.
1. Career highlight to date…
Leading the carve-out of HelloFreshGO from HelloFresh SE. I joined as CCO and within months was appointed CEO to take the business fully independent - building the operating model, commercial engine, and governance structure from scratch, while simultaneously running the fundraising process and scaling the team. We secured mid-8-figure funding, grew to 500+ enterprise clients, and delivered 10x order growth. It was the hardest thing I've done professionally, and the most rewarding.
2. An unusual career choice…
Leaving McKinsey after eight years to become the CEO of a corporate start-up nobody had heard of. HelloFreshGO was barely a concept when I joined — a small team inside HelloFresh SE with an idea about fresh food in workplaces. From the outside it looked like a sideways move at best. Most of my colleagues thought I was mad. It turned out to be the best decision of my career.
3. When you were little, what did you want to be?
An explorer. I was obsessed with maps, travel, and the idea that there were places in the world nobody had fully figured out yet. I've ended up living in London, Frankfurt, Berlin, and now Singapore - so perhaps I found a version of that after all, just with a briefcase instead of a compass.
4. Passions outside of work…
Exploring new cities and cultures - Singapore is a perfect base for that, and I take every opportunity to travel across the region. I'm genuinely curious about how different societies are organised and how economies work, which bleeds into a longstanding interest in economic policy and structural reform. I also enjoy escape rooms, which my partner Justine will tell you I take far too seriously.
5. If you could instantly master any skill or hobby…
Sailing. There's something about navigating by reading conditions in real time - wind, current, weather - that appeals to the same instinct I use professionally. I'd also get more out of the fact that I live in one of the world's great sailing regions and currently just admire the boats from the shore.
6. A personal value that guides your life…
Intellectual honesty. The willingness to tell people what you actually think - including when it's uncomfortable, when it challenges the prevailing view, or when it means admitting you were wrong. I've seen careers built on telling people what they want to hear. I find it unsatisfying and ultimately counterproductive. The best relationships I have - professionally and personally — are built on people knowing they'll get a straight answer from me.
7. A challenge outside of work that shaped you…
Relocating to Singapore in my early forties - leaving behind a well-established professional network in Europe, starting from scratch in a new continent, building new relationships, new context, new credibility. It was genuinely humbling. It also taught me that the ability to walk into a room where nobody knows you and build trust from zero is a skill, and one worth developing deliberately.
8. What will your job look like in 10 years?
I think the Operating Partner archetype will look very different - AI will handle much of what currently passes for analysis and reporting, which means the premium will shift entirely to judgment, relationships, and the ability to drive behaviour change in organisations. I'd like to think I'm working on a handful of genuinely transformative businesses, probably at board level, with a mix of NED mandates and one or two deeper operating engagements. Fewer things, higher quality.
9. If you could travel anywhere tomorrow…
Japan - specifically the rural south. I've been to Tokyo many times for work, but I've never had the time to slow down and spend a week in Kyushu or along the Nakasendo trail. Food, history, landscape, and a completely different pace. It's been on the list for three years.
10. What does success look like to you?
Working on problems that actually matter, with people I respect, in a way that produces outcomes I'm proud of. I'm less interested in titles than in impact — the EBITDA that moved, the business that scaled, the leader who figured something out they hadn't before. And having enough time and energy left for the life outside work that makes the work worth doing.
